Hey all,
A few workflows, updates, and reminders … As well as a couple of kudos to you folks for pointing out some quick ways to improve things.
1) Working with PERs on acutely ill transfers – When patients are acutely transferred from another area of the hospital (for example DFCI or Pre-Op), an ED encounter cannot be opened until the other encounter is closed. At times, this has been difficult leading to a delay for the ED to place orders. Should this happen to you (and I know it has happened to some of you), please do following –
  • Talk to the PER to see if they can close the other encounter or have them contact EPIC support to close the other encounter to activate the ED
  • If patient is critically ill and needs immediate care (which in this instance many do), please have them simply create a new MRN for the patient and do your work. It will be ‘marked for merge’ and will be folded into the actual chart. This will allow us to do our work quickly

2) Sepsis BPA – we continue to work on making the Sepsis crawler work well. If you are treating a patient who you think the Sepsis BPA should have fired and it didn’t, please do the following –
  • Ask the nurse if it fired for them and that it was suppressed for some reason
  • If it did not fire for them, email Capraro, Jess, or Marvin the name/mrn so we can investigate
We think we are close (if not there already) to having this firing appropriately!

3) Attending reminder on signing/billing BH Obs notes –
The best way to sign these is not from the Inbasket but from the ‘My Notes’ panel.
  • Head to the BH Daily Progress section
  • Find the right note and hit ‘attest’
  • When you sign the note in this manner, the obs bill form will automatically fire for you to fill out

4) HSV orders for CSF– kudos to Dr. Georgette for letting us know that the HSV orders that were in the ED preference list and in the ED Febrile Infant orderset was a send-out test that wasn’t the standard test we would want to send for neonatal HSV concerns. As a result, we removed that order from the orderset and made the right test not only be in the orderset but the first order seen if searched in the search window.
Thanks Nate!!!

5) LDAs – a reminder that if you click on the Reports tab in the ‘side by side’ panel, the Patients Lines/Drains/Airways Status section is automatically opened!
Looking to see what size a device is? When placed? It (as well as implanted devices like VP Shunts in the Implants section also found here) should be here!
——————————
As always, keep the ideas and thoughts coming to us as we continue to ‘sand down the burrs’ and make this system the best it can be!
Your ASAP team,
AJC, JKC, and MBH
